Afton Man Charged In Counterfeit Money Investigation Involving Several Reported Incidents

NORWICH — An Afton man was arrested Aug. 10 on multiple charges after an investigation into the use of counterfeit money at businesses and in an attempted vehicle purchase, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.

Russell W. Davis, 56, of Afton, was charged with four counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a Class C felony; first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a Class E felony; attempted grand larceny, a Class A misdemeanor; petit larceny, a Class A misdemeanor; and attempted petit larceny, a Class B misdemeanor, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies initially responded to a business in the Town of Norwich after receiving a report that a man had used $200 in counterfeit money to purchase items. Deputies identified the suspect as Davis.

Deputies later responded to the Town of Guilford after receiving a report that a man had attempted to purchase a pickup truck from an individual using $3,000 in counterfeit money. Deputies identified Davis as the suspect in that case as well.

Deputies also responded to another business in the Town of Norwich after receiving information that a man had attempted to purchase approximately $200 worth of products using counterfeit money. Davis was again identified as the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office.

During the investigation, deputies also linked Davis to a July 15 complaint in which a man allegedly used counterfeit money to purchase items from a business in the Town of New Berlin.

Deputies located Davis Aug. 10 on North Pond Road in the Town of Guilford. Davis was operating a motor vehicle at the time without a license and was arrested for first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Davis was arraigned in central arraignment court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.

All charges are allegations, and Davis is presumed innocent of the charges unless proven guilty in court.
