NORWICH – The Norwich Police charged a man with arson after he allegedly set multiple dumpsters on fire in the City of Norwich.

According to the Norwich Police Department, Kameron Parkhurst was arrested Thursday, Aug. 27, following an investigation into multiple dumpster fires and related property damage in the city.

Police charged Parkhurst with two counts of fifth-degree arson, and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief. The charges note the fire did damage to surrounding property, police said.

Norwich Police Chief Matthew Roberts praised the officers involved in the investigation and emphasized the risks associated with the fires.

“Setting fires, even in dumpsters, creates a significant risk to nearby property, emergency responders, and the public,” Roberts said.

“I am proud of the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by our officers throughout this investigation. The Norwich Police Department remains committed to thoroughly investigating these incidents and holding those responsible accountable for their actions,” he said.

Roberts said investigators developed probable cause and gathered evidence that allegedly implied Parkhurst was responsible for two of the incidents.

Following his arrest, Parkhurst was released with an appearance ticket in accordance with New York State law.

The Norwich Fire Department responded to the incidents and extinguished the fires.

The defendant is presumed innocent of the charges unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
