NORWICH – Access to medications is a critical part of healthcare. However, changes in the local pharmacy landscape over the last year have created new challenges for many Norwich-area residents. To help address those concerns and ensure continued access to pharmacy services close to home, UHS Chenango Memorial is moving forward with plans for a new community pharmacy.

"As healthcare needs change, we have a responsibility to evolve with them," said Cecil Miller, President and CEO of UHS Chenango Memorial. "When patients leave the hospital or visit a provider, they shouldn't have to worry about where they'll get the medications they need. Our new pharmacy is one more step we're taking to ensure patients and families can access the care they need close to home."

According to Miller, the new community pharmacy will offer a convenient retail storefront and drive-through service for patients, employees, and community members. It will also feature a ‘Meds-to-Beds’ program, which will allow patients to receive their prescriptions before leaving the hospital thus eliminating an additional stop on their journey home.

The project is driven by a commitment to improving access and removing barriers that can prevent patients from obtaining needed medications, he explained.

"We recognize the challenges many of our patients and families face due to transportation limitations, busy schedules, and other demands of daily life. That's what is driving this project," Miller said.

"By making it easier to access medications, we're helping patients begin treatment sooner, better manage chronic conditions, and improve their overall health. We have the expertise, the infrastructure, and the dedicated team necessary to make this service successful and sustainable for our community."

According to hospital leaders, construction has already begun on the pharmacy, which will be located at 6 Newton Avenue in space formerly used for diagnostic imaging services. The pharmacy is expected to open in early 2027.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital is a member of United Health Services, a locally owned not-for-profit 916-bed hospital and health care system serving the Greater Binghamton region from more than 40 locations around New York’s Southern Tier.
