NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) launches the 2026 museum season with extended Friday hours from 4 to 6 p.m. on March 6. The Community Gallery will host “Chenango County’s ‘Better Half’ — The Life and Works of Randy Glasbergen.”
This artist showcase celebrates the legacy of the renowned Sherburne-based cartoonist, including highlights from his internationally syndicated comic strip and his collection of pop culture ephemera.
In addition to lifestyle pieces reflecting the personality of the artist, “Chenango County’s ‘Better Half’ — The Life and Works of Randy Glasbergen,” features a wide variety of original production artwork. Curated by CCHS Operations Director Joseph Fryc, the exhibit chronicles the remarkable life of an artist whose humor and wit became a staple in publications around the world. At the height of his career, Glasbergen’s cartoons and comic illustrations were licensed for use by America Online, American Greetings, China Daily, Dow Jones, Funny Times, Good Housekeeping, Hallmark Cards, the Harvard Business Review, Microsoft, Reader’s Digest, Standard & Poor’s, The Wall Street Journal, and Time Warner Cable.
“Randy’s sense of humor and his tremendous talent are a sight to behold,” said Fryc. “In collaboration with the artist’s family, we have been given exclusive access to curate content for this engaging display. We are honored to have the opportunity to feature him this season.”
Born in Norwich and raised in Sherburne, Glasbergen’s professional cartooning career started when he was 15. A graduate of Sherburne-Earlville High School, he also attended the Utica College of Syracuse University. In 1977, Randy married Karen Harris in Sherburne, and the two raised four children during their 38 years of marriage.
Glasbergen’s cartoon panel, “The Better Half,” was syndicated by King Features from 1982–2014, and was published internationally every day of the week. His “Glasbergen Cartoons” is syndicated online by GoComics. He was also the author of three bestselling books about the art of cartooning: “Getting Started Drawing and Selling Cartoons,” “How To Be A Successful Cartoonist,” and “TOONS!”.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to feature Randy in this season’s Community Gallery exhibit,” said CCHS Executive Director Jessica Moquin. “We truly appreciate the Glasbergen family, whose collaborative spirit has made this dynamic gallery experience possible.”
