Winter Track: Local Trackletes Compete In Winter Classic

CORTLAND – All local Chenango County indoor track teams returned to SUNY Cortland on Saturday to compete in the 2023 Winter Classic. Norwich was the lone team in the afternoon session while Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville, Unadilla Valley, and Oxford/Greene all ran in the morning.

BGAH:

Girls:

The BGAH girls team have been excelling to start the 2023 winter season in just the third official meet of the year. As a team, the Bears took both the sprint and distance medley relays. Maddie Ingham, Macaela Burns, Emily Sprow, and Ethne Degan ran in the sprint relay for a first place finish with a time of 4:27.86. Ingham, Degan, Sage Pruskowski and Laila Williams completed the distance medley relay in a best 13:31.55 on the day.

The girls also saw one individual first place finish from Williams in the high jump event. Williams tied for first with a new personal best jump of four feet, six inches. Olivia Nichols (fifth) and Emily Sprow (sixth) also competed in the same event.

Vanessa Brazee had impressive performances in her respective events as she finished third in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:58.72 and earned a new personal best time of 3:45.92 in the 1000 meter run, where she finished in seventh place. Macaela Burns also achieved a new personal time of 8.42 seconds in the 55 meter dash, where she came in ninth place with teammate Breanna Casey in 13th place and Annika Armstrong in 15th.

Sage Pruskowski finished fifth in the 600 meter run with a time of 2:00.19 as Kaylynn Crandall ran the event in 2:23.99 for 16th place.

In the fielding events, Tori Suda repeated her performance in the shot put as she took third place for the second straight week with a distance of 24 inches, eight and a half feet. Allison Hauptmann settled in with a new personal record in the weight throw, where she came in fourth place with a best throw of 28-4.25. Emmeline Vroman came in sixth place while Emile Hopkins took eighth place in the same event.

Boys:

The BGAH boys were led by Collin Dicks who earned two first place finishes and one fourth place finish on the day. Dicks achieved first place in the long jump event with a jump of 20 feet, two and a quarter inches while also taking the top spot in the triple jump (40-7.50). He came in fourth place in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.04 seconds, just ahead of teammate Julian Pruskowski’s 7.06 seconds. Pruskowski also took second behind Dicks’ in the triple jump (40-1.75) as Harpo Hardt finished sixth and accomplished a new personal best jump of 37- 2.50.

Pruskowski also competed in the 300 meter dash along with teammate Kevin Lang. Lang came in fourth place with a new best time of 39.35 while Pruskowski finished behind him in fifth place (39.61 seconds). Declyn Marshfield capped off the fielding events with a seventh place finish in the shot put event, achieving a new record of 29 feet, 11 ¾ inches.

OX/GR:

Girls:

The Oxford/Greene girls team returned to action with Shanna Krupp, Kayla Swift, and London Lamoreaux continued to improve in their respective events. Krupp held the team’s best performance on the day with two fifth place finishes. She earned a new personal record of 23 feet, 5 ¾ inches in the shot put event while throwing a best of 22-10.25 in the weight-throw. Teammate Morgan Quarella threw a new best of 17-3.75 for ninth place in the weight-throw.

Freshman Kayla Swift finished 12th in the 300 meter dash, where she achieved a new best time of 49.62 seconds. She also ran the 600 meter event in 2:16.01 for 13th place as Alexis Clark earned a new best time of 2:24.82, which was good for 17th. London Lamoreaux finished 14th in the 55 meter dash with her new best time of 8.61 seconds.

Boys:

The Blackhawks’ boys team was led by sophomore Eddie Golden, who earned the team’s top run of the day as he finished ninth in the 600 meter run. His time of 1:42.52 was a new personal best. Nic Richette and Lazurus Ludolph both competed in the 55 meter dash, where Richette came in 12th and Ludolph right behind in 13th place. Richette set a new personal best time of 7.51 seconds. Richette also came away with a fourth place finish in the weight-throw as he threw for a new record of 29 feet, nine and ¾ inches. Isaac Utter finished ahead of Richette for third place with a throw of 30-1.50.

Junior Bartalo Bourn tied for fifth place in the pole vault with a mark of 8-6 and ran for a 14th place finish in the 55 meter hurdles.

Girls:

The Storm girls celebrated numerous impressive performances with Jaiden Schrag paving the way with a first place finish in the 55 meter hurdles, setting a new personal best time of 8.98 seconds. She also came in fourth place in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, eight inches while Kalie Fernandez-Naughton finished in seventh place (15-0). Gracie Gorrell wasn’t too far off achieving first place in the 300 meter dash, but settled for second with a time of 44.68 seconds behind the leader’s 44.41. Madison Dix set a new best time of 47.26 seconds for seventh place.

Natalya Schrag ran the 1000 meter event in 3:33.03 to finish in fourth place with Margaret Kenmah in ninth place. Noelle Fernandez-Naugton did well in the two events she competed in as she took sixth in the triple jump, accomplishing a new best jump of 28 feet, one inch. The seventh grader also finished ninth in the 600 meter run.

Boys:

The Storm boys were led by Jacob Prentice who finished fourth in the pole vault and sixth in the 300 meter dash. Prentice’s 39.94 seconds in the 300 meter dash marked a new personal best. Alex Kemnah also achieved a new personal best time in the 1600 meter run, which he ran in 5:21.32 for ninth place.

Haywood Edwards finished fourth in the 55 meters dash, which he ran in 9.27 seconds to round out the top runners while Brandon Davenport and Lucas Donato did well in the weight-throw. Davenport earned a new best throw of 27-8.34 to finish sixth while Donato came in seventh (25-0.50).
Norwich:

Girls:

The Norwich Purple Tornado girls team had a solid day with Ava Cirigliano picking up the top first place finish in the 300 meter dash with a time of 45.79. Aside from Cirgliano’s speed, Annie Boland finished eighth in the 1500 meter run, which she ran in 6:14.09.

The Norwich girls also had strong performances in the fielding events with Lara Tefft earning second place in the weight throw and finishing fourth in shot put. Tefft accomplished a new personal weight throw of 33 feet, five and a half inches. Olivia Palmer had a throw of 24-0.50, which was good for sixth place.

Briley Beckwith and Reagan Decker achieved new best records in their jumps. Beckwith finished eighth in the long jump with a best jump of 13 feet, four inches as Decker earned sixth place in the triple jump (29-4.25).

Boys:

The Norwich Purple Tornado boys were also strong in the fielding events with Gabe Blenis earning second place in the weight throw as Kaden Downey finished behind him in third with his new best throw of 39-1.50. Gabe Decker led the runners with a third place finish in the 300 meter dash, completing the event in a new best time of 38.60 seconds. Kaiden Vidler finished sixth in the 55 meter hurdles while teammate Connor Marshall ran the same event with a new best time of 9.98 seconds for ninth place.

Vidler also finished 12th in both the long and triple jumps.

It is uncertain if all teams will be competing at another meet before the new year. However, according to Schedule Galaxy, Norwich and BGAH will compete in the CNY Holiday Classic at Utica University on December 27 at 11:45 a.m. while UV’s next meet is scheduled for January 5 in the 607 Winter Invite at SUNY Cortland.
