SHERBURNE — Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center invites the community to join their evening hike from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 27, at Adams Farm in Sherburne.

Friends of Rogers Board President and SUNY Morrisville Professor Jessica Sarauer will lead hikers on the Adams Farm property trail which is 1.5 miles from the Friends of Rogers Visitor Center trails.

A carpool will leave at 5:30 p.m., from the main parking lot at 2721 NY-80.

“This hike is an opportunity to access expert information and a unique trail offering,” said Ariah Mitchell, education and communications lead for the Friends of Rogers.

Mitchell said Sarauer is a professor in the natural resources and renewable resources programs at SUNY Morrisville where she teaches Invasive Species Management.

“As a knowledgeable guide, she will be able to answer questions about the common invasive species found in this region,” said Mitchell.

The most common invasive species at Adams Farm are Japanese Knotweed, invasive honeysuckle, and Eurasian watermilfoil, according to Mitchell. Dr. Sarauer will discuss the characteristics and management of these and other invasive species.

Adams Farm is an over-looked 600 acre property that makes up Rogers Center. The 1.5 round trip farm trail runs through a series of wetlands and a hemlock forest.

“There are moderate changes in grade, boardwalks, some uneven ground, and several benches available for use,” Mitchell explained.

Along the trail, participants can also view aging ponds and an old shale quarry.

“This is a rain-or-shine hike, so dress for the weather,” said Mitchell. “Hiking boots are recommended.”

Adams Farm was established in 1933, when a Civilian Conservation Corp camp built the area’s early infrastructure, ponds, and flood barriers.
