Norwich Track Competes In STAC Championship

VESTAL - On Wednesday, the Norwich Purple Tornado track teams traveled to Vestal for the STAC Championship. Corning earned the win in both the boys and girls races. The Norwich boys finished third with 66 points behind Corning and Ithaca while the Norwich girls came in 15th with seven points.

BOYS:

The Norwich boys 4x100 relay team continues to succeed this season, earning first place with a time of 44.39 seconds. Aside from the team’s strong performance, Richard Fuller and Lucas Craddock (field) earned top finishes in their respective individual events.

Fuller earned first place in the 200 meter dash with a time of exactly 23 seconds while teammate Gabe Decker picked up a third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with Gage Titsworth in ninth place.

Zander Sutton and Holden Ryan both achieved seventh place finishes in their events. For Zander, he earned seventh in the 800 meter run, which he ran in 2:06.99. His brother Caden finished 10th in the 1600 meter run (5:00.65). Ryan competed in the 100 meter dash, finishing seventh, with a time of 11.52 seconds behind tough opponents.

Lucas Craddock continues to lead Norwich in the field events. He earned the top finish in both the long and triple jumps while finishing second in the high jump. His best jump of the day was in the triple jump with a jump of 44 feet, one 3/4 inches while marking exactly 21 feet in the long jump. He finished second (6-2) behind Chenango Valley’s 6-6.75 in the high jump.

Senior Anthony Ragonese competed in the long jump as well, finishing eighth with a jump of 19 feet, one 1/4 inches. Teammate Jerell Stokes earned a third place finish in the triple jump (40-6).

Aleks Smietana excelled in the discus event with a first place finish on a throw of 143 feet, eight inches. Gabe Blenis came in seventh place with a throw of 120-3. Harrison Matlack-Grey continued to do well in the shot put, where he finished third (43-11).

GIRLS:

The Norwich girls were led by Josey Ryan, Emma Urgo, and Olivia Schiraldi in the STAC Championship while the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also did well. The 4x100 team finished sixth while the 4x400 team came in second with a time of 5:02.34 behind Maine-Endwell’s 4:55.43.

Freshman Emma Urgo picked up four of Norwich’s seven points on the day as she earned a fourth place finish in the triple jump (31-9). She also tied with six girls, including teammate Olivia Schiraldi, for fifth place in the high jump with a jump of four feet, six inches. Teammate Hayley Slack finished 10th in the triple jump with a jump of 28-9.50.

Eighth grader Josey Ryan continues to strive in the 100 meter dash, but faced tough competition. She ran the event in 13.60 seconds to earn a point in sixth place.
