SHERBURNE – The Chenango County Sheriff's Office released the name of a Poolville man who was shot and killed along Knapp Road in the Town of Sherburne Sunday, in what police have described as a confrontation between former romantic partners.

Police are conducting an ongoing death investigation, made no arrests yet, and have released few details.

Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting confirmed Thursday that 39-year-old Joseph Hubbard, of Poolville, died after being shot by a rifle. The information was released after the Chenango County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy this week.

The shooting was first reported at about 3 p.m., Sunday. Police said the incident primarily involved an interaction between three adults at the residence but young children were home at the time and were sent hiding as the deadly confrontation unfolded.

Police said Hubbard was in a confrontation with a former female romantic partner and another person at about the time he was shot. Police have not released any other names in regard to the incident but said the gun was not fired by the former female partner.

They also confirmed the incident involved one partner traveling to the residence to confront the other.

Cutting said police responded to, “– a firearm discharge call, and when officers arrived they found a deceased person at the home. And at that point everything slows down.”

The sheriff said the investigation could take some time as police conducted background interviews and waited for forensic testing results on evidence.

Sheriff’s Lt. Joshua Gould said the office had dedicated almost all its available resources to the immediate investigation and was being aided by the New York State Police.

“There is no danger to the public. The investigation is ongoing and the people involved are all identified and not a threat,” said Cutting.

In recent days, many reached out to the office or have taken to social media to discuss the incident and speculate. The sheriff urged calm.

“We will release information when we know more, we are looking into the facts of the case and need to protect the integrity of the investigation,” he said.
