Local Athletes Qualify For NYS Indoor Track State Championships

CORTLAND- Four local indoor track athletes punched their tickets to the NYSPHSAA Championships via their top finishes at the Section IV state qualifier on February 19th. 

Norwich senior Shakira Alexander qualified in two separate girls’ varsity events: shotput and weight throw. Alexander placed second in shotput with a throw of 33 feet 11.5 inches, while also placing second in the weight throw to qualify for the state meet. Notably, Alexander is the first Norwich girls’ varsity athlete to qualify for states in the weight throw in program history. 

Oxford senior Milla Gonzalez placed first overall in the varsity girls’ 55 meter dash to clinch a state championship berth. Gonzalez finished the race in a time of 7.57 seconds.

Bainbridge-Guilford's Ethne Degan and Kayleigh Cluck qualified in the 1500 meter run with Degan placing first in a time of 4:58.94 and Cluck placing second in a time of 5:02.87. 

Degan also qualified in the 3000meter run with second place finish in a time of 10:59.79. 

The NYSPHSAA Indoor Track Championships will be held at Ocean Breeze Track and Field facility on Staten Island, NY on March 5th and 6th.
