Basketball Roundup:  S-E Marauders hurt by slow start

Boys' Basketball

Holland Patent 67, Sherburne-Earlville 52

SHERBURNE - Holland Patent shot out of the gates quickly, and the host Marauders were unable to recover in Thursday's home loss.

The visiting club jumped out to a 25-6 first-quarter lead as Markise Magyar scored 11 of his 13 points in the opening eight minutes, and Nicholas Acevado bucketed eight.

"We came out flat, and had too many turnovers," said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard.

Brock Weidman and Jack Rodman were bright spots on the Marauders' side.

Weidman had 15 points and Rodman 14 in the loss. Over the final three quarters, S-E (7-12) outscored the visiting club by a combined four points.

Girls' Basketball

Unadilla Valley 58, Deposit-Hancock 24

NEW BERLIN - Unadilla Valley closed out its season with back-to-back wins, with Thursday's victory rating among the best all-around team performances of the season.

"We played out of our minds tonight," said UV coach Brandi Whitbeck. "…we had it in us."

Kadence York capped her season with a season-high 26 points to go with 11 rebounds.

York did all of her offensive work over the first three quarters as the Storm built a 53-19 advantage over the Eagles.

Jaiden Schrag added 12 points in the victory as UV finishes with a 6-13 record.

Delhi 55, Greene 34

DELHI - Delhi advanced to the Midstate Athletic Conference title game on the strength of lights-out shooting in the first two quarters.

"They were 7-of-9 shooting from three in the first half at one point," said Greene coach Dave Gorton of Delhi. "We were down 15-11, and they were shooting great. I think their outside shooting rattled our offense, and we missed many easy shots we normally make. Sylvia (Liddle) blocked many shots, too."

Liddle and Libby Lamport each hit three three-pointers in the first half as the Bulldogs raced to a 35-13 halftime advantage.

Liddle led all scorers with 18 points, and Lamport scored 14.

Olivia Kennedy and Payton Yahner scored 10 points apiece for Greene (14-4).

Unatego 55, Oxford 41

WELLS BRIDGE - Unatego advanced in the Midstate Athletic Conference Tournament using an 11-0 run in the first half to open a big lead over the Blackhawks on Thursday.

"They are a very well coached team," said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. "They went on that run in the first and second quarter, and we couldn't recover."

Alexa Lucia had two buckets during the first-half Unatego run, and Tatum Codington hit a three-pointer that pushed the Spartans' lead to 13.

Lucia led Unatego with 15 points, while Kylie Mussaw added 12.

Madalyn Barrows scored 21 points, and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Oxford (12-7).

Walton 37, Bainbridge-Guilford 32

WALTON - Jacqlyn Gransbury hit three late free throws for Walton, while Havyn Merwin's lone bucket of the game added insurance as the Warriors beat Bainbridge-Guilford at home on Thursday.

Gransbury, Walton's leading scorer all season, finished with 20 points to lead all scorers.  After a slow first half, Granbury scored seven in the third to help her team push its lead to five.

Johnna Henderson scored 12 points to lead B-G, and Celeste Baldwin had nine.
