NORWICH — On Tuesday, Sept. 8, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to 4777 County Road in the town of Norwich to assist New York State Police in searching for a missing 78-year-old woman with dementia, according to Norwich Fire Chief Gerald E. Parry Jr.

Parry said multiple agencies began a coordinated search effort, with crews searching on foot and using UTVs, drones and K-9 units.

A unified command was established consisting of members of the New York State Forest Rangers, New York State Police, Norwich Fire Department, Norwich Police Department, Oxford Fire Department, Sidney Police Department, Chenango County Office of Emergency Services and the county Search and Rescue Team, along with assistance from the emergency 911 center.

According to Parry, the woman was located uninjured at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday and reunited with family members. She was then transported to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The fire chief thanked all personnel involved in the search, as well as the woman’s family members and neighbors. He also thanked the department’s rehab unit for providing support and water to responders throughout the search.
