NORWICH - Sunday, November 22, marked the 34 Annual Norwich YMCA Turkey Trot. The annual 5K drew hundreds of competitors from all over the area.

This year 638 runners competed for the top spot overall and in their age groups. Coming in number one overall was John Mooney of Norwich. Mooney, a first time winner, ran the race in 17:04. “I haven’t been able to compete since 2012,” said Mooney, a runner on the R.I.T. Cross Country team. “I was lucky enough to be able to come home a little early from college this year to run it.”

Mooney competes on the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Division III Cross Country team and was able to compete in D-III’s Atlantic Region meet on November 14.

Coming in second place overall this year was Shaun Horan with a time of 17:06. Horan is a three time winner of the race as well as Mooney’s former cross country coach at Norwich High School.

For the ladies the overall winner was Katie Nolan. Competing in the 12-19 age group, Nolan finished with a time of 18:54.62. Nolan beat out the next best woman by 40 seconds for first place.

“The weather this year was great and we had a great corporate team presence as well as many different athletes from the high schools,” said Norwich YMCA Fitness Director and one of the many coordinators of the Turkey Trot Shannon Gawronski. “638 runners is one of the best years that we have ever had in the 34 years of the race.”

Congratulations to all those who competed and good luck to those who will again next year.
