NORWICH – For expectant parents and families with newborns, early parenthood can be both joyful and overwhelming. On Saturday, May 2, community organizations from across the region will come together to help ease that transition with a Community Baby Shower to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.

The free event, now in its seventh year, is open to pregnant individuals, new parents, and families with babies up to 12 months old.

Organizers say the annual gathering has become an important point of connection for local families, pairing practical information and resources with a welcoming, celebratory atmosphere.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate families in our community, answer questions, and connect them to care and resources that will support them during pregnancy and throughout their baby’s first year,” said Melissa Stagnaro, Director of Development & Engagement at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital. “We couldn’t be more pleased to host this event again this year, especially with its proximity to Mother’s Day.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the hospital’s maternity department, meet members of the Women’s Health provider team, and attend two educational sessions – one on breastfeeding, and the other on childhood vaccinations.

In addition, more than 15 community agencies will be on hand to share information on maternal and child health services, nutrition, family support programs, and safety education. Among those tabling will be event organizers Mothers & Babies Perinatal Network, Chenango County Public Health Department, Healthy Families Chenango, UHS Women’s Health Center Norwich, and CAPCO WIC.

Chris Arnold of the Chenango County Public Health Department explained the Community Baby Shower reflects a growing understanding that healthy outcomes begin long before delivery.

“Supporting families early makes a real difference,” Arnold said. “When parents know where to turn for help – whether it’s nutrition support, lead prevention or developmental services – their children are more likely to get a strong start. This event helps families learn what’s available and reminds them they’re not alone.”

In addition to education and outreach, the celebration includes games, refreshments, a photo booth, and hourly prize drawings – all provided at no cost to attendees.

According to Stagnaro, these elements help create a relaxed environment where families feel comfortable asking questions and making connections.

“When we bring everyone together in one place, it reduces barriers,” she said. “Families can meet healthcare providers, public health professionals, and community advocates all in one morning. That kind of access can be powerful.”

No pre-registration is required for the event. Families seeking additional information can contact the Mothers & Babies Perinatal Network at (607) 772-0517 or by email at mmarsh@mothersandbabies.org.
