SHERBURNE— The Sherburne-Earlville Timberwolves co-ed swim team hosted Utica Proctor on Tuesday, which was also senior night. S-E celebrated its seniors in a big way with a 63-35 victory.
S-E celebrated seniors Amelia Casscles, Bethany Garrison, and Robert Schaefer toward the end of Tuesday’s home meet, then secured the program’s first victory since 2019.
“Our main issue has been not having the numbers,” said coach Sarah Hill, who added that S-E won multiple dual meets in 2019 and finished second in the section. “We have fast kids but can’t fill all of the relays, which provide more points. Luckily, with 12 swimmers, we were able to grab a win Tuesday.”
Schaefer, who played basketball last year but returned to the swim team as a senior for his third varsity season, dropped 3 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke for a first-place finish in 1 minute, 14.88 seconds. He also won the 200 individual medley.
Third-year varsity swimmer Casscles appeared in the maximum of four events – the 50 freestyle and three relays – to assist in the team win.
Garrison, who is in her first year with the team, cut 2 seconds off of her 50 free time during a relay split.
Parker McCracken won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Ava Flanagan took first in the 100 butterfly and 500 free, and our 200 medley relay team of Schaefer, McCracken, Flanagan, and Brendan McCracken won with a season-best time of 2:10.87.
Eighth-grader Brendan McCracken also qualified for sectionals in the 100 breaststroke, lowering his season-best time from 1:30.33 to 1:24.39.
Other S-E highlights included Isaac Larchar dropping 15 seconds in the 200 free (2:42.54) and competing in the 100 butterfly for the first time to achieve his goal of competing in every swimming event this season; Jaecie Morak dropping 7 seconds in the 100 free (1:28.71); Clayton Lawton cutting 4 seconds in the 100 free (1:13.35); and Lindsey Hatch lowering her 50 free time by a half-second.
Good luck to the Timberwolves, as they compete in the Tri Valley Championships on Saturday at Rome Free Academy. Sectionals will follow February 10 at Syracuse Nottingham.
