TOMPKINS COUNTY - Troopers from SP Ithaca and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department are actively investigating a recent string of vehicle “smash and grabs” in the eastern portion of Tompkins County.
These crimes involve a suspect(s) breaking windows and quickly stealing valuables from parked cars – often within seconds.
Law enforcement members are urging residents and anyone visiting the area to take precautions and report any suspicious activity.
On October 1, 2025, Troopers received a report of a vehicle that had its front passenger side window smashed and thieves stole numerous items, including a wallet with identification and multiple credit cards.
The victim’s vehicle was parked unoccupied in a parking lot near Dryden Lake.
A second person reported that their window was smashed, and their vehicle was rummaged through while in a pull off on Chaffee Road.
The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department responded to four similar break-ins involving parked and unoccupied vehicle on the same day.
The multiple incidents were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Community awareness and quick reporting play a vital role in preventing property crimes and apprehending suspects.
Protect yourself from becoming a victim: Remove all valuables from your car, especially electronics, wallets and bags. Even if you plan to be away for a few minutes, take your belongings with you or lock them in the trunk before reaching your destination.
If possible, park in a well-lit area.
Be aware and report any suspicious behavior or unfamiliar individuals in the area and your neighborhood.
New York State Police are asking residents who live in the the Dryden and Lansing area to take a look at any surveillance or ring doorbell footage for suspicious activity from October 1 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
