NORWICH - The City of Norwich has contracted ArborPro to inventory trees within the City's right-of-way during August and September.
ArborPro is an urban forest management company serving municipalities and clients across the country. Their certified staff will be measuring street and park trees (no yard trees) and locating potential planting spaces throughout the city.
The inventory data will be used to help the city plan future tree plantings and conduct tree maintenance. It will also be the foundation of an urban forest management plan, which will be authored by the Arbor Pro staff.
Look for upcoming public meetings and other ways to provide input on the future of Norwich’s trees. Funds for this project were secured in 2023 through the NYSDEC Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program, which is supported by the Environmental Protection Fund.
Summer Tree Tips: Continue to water young trees when rain is scarce. Mulching trees and shrubs is an excellent way to retain soil moisture, add nutrients to the soil, and avoid lawn mower and weed whip damage. Apply a wide, even layer of woodchips, 2-4 inches thick around the tree, leaving a gap by the trunk- like a donut. Remove staking materials from trees planted last year. If the tree cannot stand on its own, readjust the stakes, ensuring the tree can sway in the wind. Lastly, make sure that strings of lights are removed annually. They can girdle trees if left on during the growing season.
