NORWICH – The Chenango County Department of Social Services (DSS) adult protective services division is celebrating a rare occurrence, being the only agency in New York not recently flagged by state officials for the handling of its operations.
The program was recently reviewed by New York State for compliance of services and performance. Upon review, auditors found that the Chenango County adult protective services program was the only one in the state that has been without a state-issued performance improvement plan over the last four years.
“It’s great news,” said Elizabeth Beers, Chenango County DSS director of services. “Our staff has done a fabulous job to make sure that we’re serving the Chenango County community to the best of our ability.”
“We’re proud of the results and I’m very proud of the staff,” said Chenango County DSS Commissioner Daniel Auwarter. “They work very, very hard. I think they’re a testament to Chenango County’s commitment to our community.”
The Chenango County Adult Protective Services division works with physically or mentally impaired individuals 18 years or older who are at risk of harm or have unmet essential needs. Services may include the assessment of an individual's needs, casework counseling, finding alternative living conditions, and providing preventative, social, medical, homemaker, guardianship, or legal support.
