NORWICH - Commerce Chenango is excited to announce they have been awarded a Strategic Planning and Feasibility Study Grant from Empire State Development.

This program promotes economic development in the State of New York by encouraging economic and employment opportunities and stimulating development of communities and urban areas.

Sal Testani, Commerce Chenango President & CEO said, “We are very pleased we were able to secure this grant, and we appreciate the fact that Governor Hochul and Empire State Development made grants like these available to communities like ours. With this support, we can plan for our future and execute the 2050 Vision Plan.”

Shane Butler, Chenango County Planning Director echoed Testani’s sentiment, “Chenango County has gone years without a comprehensive Economic Development Strategic Plan.” He continued, “Building on the recently adopted Chenango County 2050 Vision Plan, this Strategic Plan will outline concrete steps for implementation, aimed at fostering a thriving local economy. We’re excited to collaborate with Commerce Chenango on this important document."

According to Empire State Development, Program funding is available for working capital grants of up to $100,000 each to support

1) strategic development plans for a city, county, or municipality or a significant part thereof and 2) feasibility studies for sites or facilities assessment and planning. Projects should focus on economic development purposes, and preference shall be given to projects located in highly distressed communities.

Tyler Oliver, Commerce Chenango Economic Development Director added “We're incredibly grateful to receive this New York State grant, which will allow Commerce Chenango to develop a comprehensive economic development strategic plan.”

“This initiative is a critical step in identifying both the challenges and opportunities facing our county. With this support, we’ll be able to engage with stakeholders across the region and create a roadmap that will guide us through the next several years as we work to strengthen our local economy, support businesses, and enhance quality of life for residents,” he said.

“In order to understand and revitalize the local economy, we need to make informed, intelligent decisions. This grant is a significant step to helping achieve this,” added Testani.
