Local Track Teams Compete In Opening Day Of State Qualifiers

UNION-ENDICOTT – All Chenango County teams were in full strength for the 2024 track and field state qualifiers. Day one of a two-day event kicked off on Wednesday and will wrap up this evening at Union-Endicott High School. There were about half of the events scored on Wednesday, where the local athletes strived to finish among the top 24 athletes who qualified. The remaining events will be held this afternoon and finish this evening to determine who advances to the State meet on June 7 and 8 if they haven’t already met the standards throughout the regular season.

AFTON:

Afton had two athletes competing in the opening round of the state qualifiers. Equan Patterson competed in the boys’ outdoor pentathlon, where he finished seventh overall with a score of 1377.

He finished eighth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.11 seconds. He took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 10.71 meters (35-1.75) and completed his event tied for ninth place in the high jump with a jump of 1.55 meters or five feet, one inch. Teammate Thomas Joyce finished eighth in the 400 meter run with a time of 52.70.
