NORWICH – On July 26, 2023, Martha Ryan, Public & School Liaison for DCMO BOCES, graduated from the Appalachian Leadership Institute (ALI), a leadership and economic development program sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).

Ryan was one of three leaders chosen to represent the New York region to join the program. The rigorous selection process focuses on selecting fellows with solid potential to impact progress for the 13 Appalachian states served by the ARC.

District Superintendent Michael Rullo highlighted the importance of this accomplishment by saying, “Ryan’s completion of this program enhances our understanding of opportunities that can impact workforce and educational collaborations.” Rullo also expressed his appreciation to ARC for the professional and community development opportunity provided to Ryan to support education and community relations.

In the nine months leading up to graduation, Ryan and fellows from the Appalachian region participated in six sessions, including skill-building seminars with regional experts, peer-to-peer learning, and case study analysis. All aspects of the curriculum were designed to equip fellows with the knowledge and network needed to create positive change in their communities. Ryan is one of the DCMO BOCES Career Destinations Program team members, a Chenango County Industrial Development Agency board member, and a SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus advisory board member. According to Ryan, ARC provided the equivalent of a Master's in Community Development.

“The institute’s well-crafted curriculum and experiences raised awareness of similar challenges and opened our eyes to collaboration and unity. We are now a network of leaders seeking solutions beyond our state boundaries to benefit the Appalachian region,” said Ryan As an Appalachian Leadership Institute graduate, Ryan is now part of 38 graduates who will join the ALI Alumni Network.
