EAST SYRACUSE – On Saturday, the Greene Trojans shutout the Sandy Creek Comets 6-0 to become Class C regional champions for the second time in program history (‘12 and ‘22). According to Section 4 softball, Greene is 3-1 in the state playoffs with one championship appearance in the 5-2 loss to Greenwich.

It was a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings until Greene got on the board in the fourth. McKenzie Scott reached on an error and Payton Yahner doubled before Kylie Ferris drove in a run with a single. Abbey Yahner also reached on an error where two runs scored.

Greene scored its final three runs in the top of the seventh. Abbey Yahner scored on Kenzie Button’s RBI single while Olivia Kennedy finished 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. Scott drove in Kennedy for Greene's final sixth run.

Kennedy was dominant on the mound for the Trojans. She pitched a one-hitter on the day. The lone single came in the third inning from Sandy Creek’s ninth batter in the lineup. Sandy Creek also reached base on two walks but failed to score. Kennedy struck out six batters in the win.

Kennedy and the Greene Trojans head to Moriches Athletic Complex on Long Island, where they will be facing S.S. Seward at 9 a.m. Saturday for the semi-finals. Greenwich is back in the state playoffs playing Avon. It could be a potential Greene-Greenwich 2012 rematch in the championship. Greene joins Section IV hopefuls Vestal, Chenango Valley, and Deposit-Hancock in the state playoffs representing the remaining A, B, and D classes.

Good luck to the Greene Trojans.
