NORWICH — Thursday night football at Ulrich Field showcased plenty of grit and offensive flashes from the Norwich Purple Tornado, but a high-powered Waverly offense proved too much to handle, handing Norwich a 48-14 defeat. Despite the lopsided final score, Norwich battled from the opening whistle, trading blows and putting together sustained drives against a tough Wolverine defense.
Waverly set the tone early by marching down the field to score on its opening possession. However, the Purple Tornado immediately answered with an impressive response. Norwich methodically moved the ball deep into Wolverine territory behind strong running from Nick Sylstra and Bryce Wellington, coupled with crisp completions to Baylen Miller, Gavin Burrell, and Damien Dubois. The promising drive ultimately stalled at the Waverly 33-yard line on a turnover on downs. Waverly extended its lead on its next possession, though Norwich’s defense fought hard, highlighted by several key tackles from Joey Parker.
Looking to get on the board in the second quarter, Norwich suffered an interception, and Waverly quickly capitalized to add to its lead. Undeterred, the Purple Tornado put together a fantastic response drive anchored by Bo Brown, who chewed up significant yardage on the ground before capping it off himself with an electric 18-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-6. Waverly answered right back with a quarterback keeper just before the intermission, taking a 28-6 advantage into the locker room.
To start the second half, Norwich's defense dug in its heels. After the Purple Tornado were forced to punt from deep in their own territory, Waverly took over at the Norwich 48. This time, the Norwich defense stood tall, forcing the Wolverines into their first turnover on downs of the night thanks to standout tackles from Blayne Sutton, Gavin Burrell, Teagyn Demuth, and Damien Dubois.
Waverly eventually found its rhythm again, but Norwich continued to fight until the final horn. Early in the fourth quarter, the Purple Tornado orchestrated their second scoring march of the night. The drive was highlighted by a dramatic, fourth-down bobbling catch by Dubois, setting up a touchdown run by Bryce Wellington. Brown then connected with Miller for a successful two-point conversion, making it 41-14.
The Purple Tornado defense continued to contest every yard down the stretch, with Nick Sylstra, Teagyn Demuth, and Kolby Vielandi delivering key stops. Norwich got the ball back with two minutes remaining in regulation, closing out the contest with hard-fought runs by Cameron Carnachan as the clock expired.
The Purple Tornado will look to build on their offensive rhythm and defensive resilience as they prepare to hit the road next week, facing Maine-Endwell on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
