NORWICH — The Norwich Dollars for Scholars is holding its 9th annual NBT 5K Walk and Run on Sunday, May 15 at 9 a.m.
“After two years of virtual race events due to the pandemic, we are excited to bring the event back as an in-person road race. It’s so much fun to hold such a successful event that allows the student chapter, the board, and the community to work together hand in hand. We hope to make this year our largest yet!” said DFS board member Rachel Flanagan, who first organized this event 9 years ago.
The pre-registration fee is $25 for adults and $20 for students. Participants who pre-register will receive a T-shirt, and all participants will receive yogurt donated by Chobani and bottled water at the finish line. There are trophies for the first female and male runners, and medals for the second and third place females and males.
Participants will complete a 3.1 mile loop that goes south on Midland Avenue, then left onto Hale Street, left onto East River Road, left onto East Main Street and left onto Midland Avenue which takes you back to the NHS track.
More information about this race and the online registration link can be found at the DFS website norwich.dollarsforscholars.org. Hard copies of the registration may be obtained at the Norwich Family YMCA or at the main office in the Norwich High School.
In addition to thanking NBT for their support, DFS would like to thank their other sponsors, Blueox Corporation, Canasawacta Country Club, Chenango County Children's Law Office, In Motion Design, LaBella, Laral Management Company, NYCM Insurance, Preferred Mutual Insurance and Wilson Funeral Home.
Event organizer Pat Dietrich said that Norwich Dollars for Scholars and our students are fortunate to be in such an involved and generous community.
“After taking a break last year from requesting sponsors, we had businesses contacting us to be able to be involved in this event this year. We are very grateful for the support,” said Dietrich.
Directly following the NBT DFS 5K Walk and Run on Sunday, May 15 will be a chicken BBQ at the VFW at 61 East Main Street in Norwich from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Tickets for chicken will be pre-sold by the Norwich Dollars for Scholars students starting the week of April 28, although there may be a limited amount of chicken available for purchase that day.
Norwich Dollars for Scholars is a local chapter of the national Scholarship America organization. The group is all volunteer run and raises scholarship funds through community fundraising/donations and fundraisers such as these held by our local student chapter. The Norwich High School students work year round to put together events such as this to generate scholarships for graduating NHS seniors.
