Oxford Boys Fall In Edmeston Tourney Final

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Oxford 54, Edmeston 41

Mount Markham 89, Oxford 29

EDMESTON - Mount Markham blitzed Oxford for 34 points in the opening quarter, and cruised to the Edmeston Tournament title on Thursday.

The Mustangs had seven different players make threes, and seven players scored at least eight points led by Shaun Jones' 12.

"They couldn't miss (from the field)," said Oxford coach Booker Davis.

The loss came one day removed from the Blackhawks (1-7) picking up their first win of the season on Wednesday beating the host Panthers.

Oxford had its best first half of the season taking a 33-11 lead into the half.

Ethan Fleury scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the first two quarters, while John Rovente and Donovan Rickard scored seven each.

Rickard added 11 points in the win, and Nolan Dodzweit added 10.

Fleury and Troy Simpson were each selected to the all-tournament team.

Oxford 50, South Kortright 43

EDMESTON  - Just as it did the night before, Oxford used a strong start to the fourth quarter to propel it to victory.

The Blackhawks (6-3) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to build a 42-31 lead en route to an Edmeston tournament championship over longtime Section IV power South Kortright on Thursday.

The Rams closed an eight-point deficit in the third quarter to three getting a 3 from Emily Andersen and a pair of free throws cutting the margin to 34-31 entering the final stanza.

Kyla Kelsey-Jones scored inside for Oxford in the first minute of the fourth off a feed from Ella Kelsey to start the Blackhawks' run.

Ava Benjamin had the next four points for Oxford, and leading scorer Madalyn Barrows capped the spurt with a layup off a Benjamin pass to make it 42-31.

South Kortright made a late-game run closing the deficit to 46-43 after a Kacey Eckert layup with two minutes left.

Oxford, though, secured the championship following two free throws from Barrows, and an Ella Kelsey layup.

Barrows had 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead Oxford.  Kyla Kelsey Jones added eight points and 13 boards, while Ella Kelsey and Ava Benjamin netted eight points each.

Tioga 51, Bainbridge-Guilford 29

BAINBRIDGE - In the Kazalski Tournament consolation game, Bainbridge-Guilford's record fell to 1-4 on the season losing to Tioga.

The Bobcats pared a 26-11 halftime deficit to 29-22 after three periods as Johnna Henderson scored five, and Danielle McEntee added four points.

The Tigers, though, responded with their best quarter of the game outscoring B-G 22-7.  Reese Howey scored seven of her 14 points, and Abby Foley netted six of her 13 points.

Henderson led the Bobcats scoring 11 points.

Windsor 45, Sherburne-Earlville 29

NEW BERLIN - The long ball was the difference in Windsor's Unadilla Valley consolation game victory over Sherburne-Earlville on Wednesday afternoon.

The Black Knights hit seven 3s, while S-E did not connect on a three ball giving Windsor a 21-0 advantage from long range.

Sydney Angelo had 15 points for Windsor with all of those points coming on three-pointers. Autumn Helstein also scored 15 for the victors.

Sherburne-Earlville was hurt by 12-for-61 (19.7) shooting in the game.  Chesnee Miller paced the Marauders with 10 points to go with four steals. Amelia Moyer added a team-high 14 rebounds.

WRESTLING

Windsor Christmas Tournament

WINDSOR - Tioga led from start to finish claiming the Windsor Wrestling Tournament team title on Thursday.

The Tigers had four overall finalists and polled 154.5 points to easily outdistance Section III's Indian River (107).

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville placed 11th with 67 total points.

The Bears were led by 102-pound champion Darren Florance earned an 8-2 decision over Shoreham Wading River's Gavin Mangano.

Norwich took six athletes to the tournament, and two placed among the top six as Norwich placed 18th with 40 points.

Brady Smith was fifth for Norwich at 145 pounds, while Ashton Jenkins wrestled back for a fifth at 160 pounds.
