SHERBURNE– Vernon-Verona-Sherrill had the size advantage inside, but it was first-half miscues that accounted for much of the difference in VVS's Sherburne-Earlville Tournament championship game win over the Marauders on Saturday night.

"They're big, quick and athletic," said S-E head coach Kevin Vibbard. "In the first half, we turned it over too much, which led to easy buckets (for them)."

Elijah Donegan had 13 points in the second quarter for the Red Devils - including three 3 balls - lifting his team to a 37-15 halftime lead over the host club.

The Marauders rebounded with a strong third quarter closing the deficit to as little as 12 points. Zach Trass scored nine of his 11 points in the second half, while Brock Weidman hit for eight of his team-high 17 points.

"I'm proud of the fact we fought back," Vibbard said. "We gave an outstanding effort in the second half. We could have rolled over, and we didn't. That shows we have an opportunity to have a good season."

Friday, the Marauders (2-1) blanketed the Cooperstown offense building a 27-11 halftime lead en route to a 67-38 victory.

Weidman scored 18 points in the victory, and Taylor Gryzmkowski added 12 in a balanced team scoring performance.

"Our defense just wore (Cooperstown) down," Vibbard said. "I liked our defensive intensity, and our discipline in halfcourt sets."

The Marauders play at Mount Markham on Tuesday.

Unadilla Valley and Cooperstown matched up in the tournament's consolation game, and Hawkeyes prevailed over the Storm, 50-46.

Charlie Lambert had two threes and scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the third helping Cooperstown take a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Storm struggled from the foul line during the game hitting just 2-of-9, but were 0-for-5 in the final quarter.

Zach Smith scored 12 points for UV, while Zach Fleming and Trent Marinelli netted 10 apiece.
