Police Seek Person Who Painted Hate Messages On Norwich Properties

NORWICH — The Norwich police area investigating a rash of racist graffiti incidents that likely occurred Wednesday night or in the early hours of Thursday morning on North Mitchell Street, Mechanic Street and Gold Street.

Police are seeking public feedback and are asking anyone with information to call (607)334-2424.

“On Thursday, November 11, 2021, the Norwich City Police Department received four separate complaints of spray painted graffiti in the City of Norwich.,” reported Norwich Police Chief Rodney Marsh.

“In the four separate cases, the private property that was spray painted had racial slurs, sexual orientation slurs, and the number 666 spray painted on the property with face that had X’s for eyes with a smile,” explained Detective Sergeant Reuben Roach.

Police said they did not believe the crimes were targeting a specific person in the area.

Property and structures that were targeted were painted with black paint some of which had racist obscenities written on them, including the N-word along with derogatory sexual comments.

“We are working diligently to find the person or persons responsible for this, and we are asking the public to check their property, their house cameras if they have them, and to report anything suspicious that they might have noticed last night into this morning.”

“We will not tolerate this activity or property destruction, and our detectives and police officers will continue to investigate this matter until an arrest is made,” said Chief Marsh.
