ONEONTA - Greene’s first state tournament appearance in 30 years ended in similar fashion to previous years’ playoff runs.

Facing Section III champion Cooperstown in the Class C boys’ soccer regionals, the Hawkeyes advanced with the overtime golden goal defeating the Trojans, 2-1, at Wright National Soccer Campus on Saturday.

Cooperstown’s Lucas Gardner-Olsen took advantage of a big scoring opportunity, and tallied unassisted with 3:20 remaining in the first overtime period.

“Our team had the larger portion of possession and game control,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “Unfortunately, we could not get a second finish….In overtime, we again had the better side of game control; however, one opportunity, and Cooperstown capitalized on it. They are a quick, talented group.”

After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, Cooperstown broke the scoreless tie in the 46th minute, when, Liam Spencer scored unassisted.
