DRYDEN - In the midst of its best regular season in decades, Norwich's volleyball team took that momentum into the 11-team Dryden Tournament on Saturday.

Ranked number two in the recent Max Preps New York State Class B poll, the Purple Tornado lived up to that billing capturing the overall team championship.

"This team is learning to believe, and learning what it takes to win," said Norwich coach Shelly Alger. "We are on a roll, and their hard work is paying off."

While the offensive numbers have sparkled on the stat sheet, Alger said it all starts with the defense. That defense led Norwich to eight wins in eight sets, and not one team reached 20 points.

In the opening rounds of pool play, Norwich beat Moravia 25-15, 25-8; Lansing 25-18, 25-19; and Union Springs, 25-13, 25-17.

In the gold bracket semifinals, Norwich again beat Lansing, 25-18, and in the championship match, Norwich (10-1) topped Trumansburg, 25-14.

"This is the first time I can remember our volleyball team being in contention for a (STAC) division title," Alger said. "It's always held by either Windsor or Owego. This is the first time we have beaten either team, and still have a tough road ahead of us. I'd like to take one step up the ladder at a time."

Norwich plays at Susquehanna Valley on Tuesday, and hosts Unadilla Valley on Wednesday.
