Statement from the Chenango County Health Department:

The CDC recommends that people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems receive an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine after a second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Additional doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine should be administered at least 28 days after the second dose. An additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine is NOT recommended for any other groups. At this time, additional doses are NOT authorized for immunocompromised individuals who receive Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. More data is being gathered.

Who Needs an Additional COVID-19 Vaccine?

Currently, only moderately to severely immunocompromised people should receive an additional dose. These conditions and treatments include but are not limited to:

-Active treatment for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies

-Receipt of solid-organ transplant and taking immunosuppressive therapy

-Receipt of CAR-T-cell or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (within 2 years of transplantation or taking immunosuppression therapy)

- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (for example DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)

- Advanced or untreated HIV infection

- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (i.e., ≥20mg prednisone or equivalent per day), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, tumor-necrosis (TNF) blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory.

People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them. Consult your health care provider before scheduling an appointment for a third dose of vaccine to determine the degree of immune compromise and the preferred timing of vaccination based on your current or planned therapies.

Additional doses are NOT intended for persons with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, for which there might be mild associated immunosuppression. There is no requirement for proof or prescription from the individual's health care provider. The mandatory New York State COVID-19 Vaccine Form includes a self-attestation question regarding eligibility for vaccination and must be completed prior to vaccination.
