NORWICH – There was a fire at a Norwich laundromat on Sunday, and in under two minutes the City of Norwich Fire Department was on scene.

According to Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, at approximately 3:19 p.m. on Sunday, a 911 caller reported that there was a fire at the Byrne Dairy laundromat on East Main Street in Norwich.

Papelino said firefighters were on scene by 3:21 p.m., and that a fire had started due to built up lint following years of use. He said the dryer’s lint traps had been cleaned out the night before, but that the lint seemed to have come from inside the machine near the drum.

“When we arrived we determined that the fire was contained to a single dryer, and was caused due to lint buildup near its vent,” said Papelino. “The lint filters really weren’t that dirty, it was more that after years of use some of the other lint got down on the vent, and that’s what started the fire.”
