NORWICH – Thanks to a coalition of local organizations, the Department of Defense will be back to do another “Greater Chenango Cares” Innovative Readiness Training event this year; providing free services such as dental, medical, and vision work.
The event will be held this summer at the Norwich High School/Middle School complex from July 11 to July 20, 2019.
Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) is a Department of Defense military training opportunity, exclusive to the United States and its territories, that delivers joint training opportunities to increase deployment readiness. Simultaneously, IRT provides key services including health care, construction, transportation, and cybersecurity with lasting benefits for American communities.
“Greater Chenango Cares is a very exciting mission for us,” said Captain Jennifer Fagan, Operations Officer for the Innovative Readiness Training program. “It is an opportunity where members of the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Army, Navy Reserve and Navy can train together in a real world setting while at the same time helping the local communities. The training we receive will help to prepare us for future deployments.”
According to event representatives, this summer hundreds of reservists, led by the United States Air National Guard, will come to Norwich to provide no-cost medical, dental, vision, and veterinary services to the community. Similar events were held in Norwich in 2015 and 2016 providing approximately $2.3 million worth of medical and veterinary services to over 4,000 patients at no cost to participants. Just like in 2016, a sister-site will be held in Cortland County this year at the Homer Intermediate School in Homer, New York.
Jen Gregory, Executive Director of Southern Tier 8, the applicant for the program, stated, “Southern Tier 8 Regional Board is thrilled to once again host the Department of Defense’s Innovative Readiness Training event in two locations within our eight-county region. This event traditionally welcomes hundreds of locals seeking no-cost medical services and reliable results. A special thank you to our community members for partnering with the military in making this event happen!”
The local organizations that made this event possible include Chenango United Way, Chenango Health Network, Chenango County Planning Department, Chenango County Fire and Rescue, Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Chenango SPCA, Norwich City Schools, and Southern Tier 8.
Services available will include:
• Medical: Physical exams, school and sports physicals (bring your school form), blood pressure/disease screenings, and more.
