Bainbridge man indicted on 17 counts following alleged road rage shooting

NORWICH – A Bainbridge man alleged to have murdered an Afton man in a fit of road rage was indicted by the Chenango County Grand Jury Thursday.

John M. Guzy, 56, was indicted on 17 counts related to the death of Derek S. Prindle, 26, of Afton and the injury of Prindle’s father, Derek D. Prindle, 60 of Afton.

The 17 charges Guzy faces include murder in the second degree, a class A-1 felony; attempted murder in the second degree, a class B felony; two counts of assault in the first degree, a class B felony; two counts of criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, a class B felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony; tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony; driving while intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor; and six counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.

It is alleged, per the indictment, that on or about Oct. 27 at approximately 1:25 p.m. in the parking lot of Peak Fitness located at 2907 State Highway 7 in the Town of Bainbridge, Guzy did intentionally cause the death of Derek S. Prindle by shooting him in the chest with a .25 caliber Beretta Jetfire semi-automatic handgun causing a lacerated aorta, which did cause the victim's death.
