Greene offense in midseason form in shutout of Oxford

Greene 35, Oxford 0

OXFORD – From afar, it may have looked like someone greased up the football when Oxford had the ball on offense.

The Blackhawks had 11 fumbles over the course of four quarters, while the Greene offense was in midseason form in the Trojans’ shutout victory Friday night.

It was Greene’s second straight shutout over Oxford in as many seasons, and third straight victory in this long-standing rivalry.

“We could not get a good snap to save our lives,” lamented Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “It could have been opening-game jitters, and it’s something we need to fix by next week.”

While Oxford’s offense was its own worst enemy, the Trojans’ offense was the Oxford defense’s worst enemy.

Scott Gorton threw TD passes of 60, 20, and 12 yards to Brendan Kinne, and Tyler Beckwith added a one-yard TD run as the Trojans rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead. “We just did not have an answer for Kinne on the outside,” Chrystie said. “Other than a couple of runs, we did okay against their rushing attack. Their passing spread us out more than we expected, and they executed extremely well.”

Gorton finished 8-for-16 with one interception for 203 yards, Kinne caught five balls for 148 yards, while Beckwith rushed for 81 yards on 10 carries. Nick Wilcox added a 38-yard TD scamper in the second half to cap the game’s scoring.

“We were able to move the ball, we just shot ourselves in the foot,” Chrystie said. “I told the guys after the game that we just played a very good team that is competing for a Class C title. This game has no bearing on what we do the rest of the season. It won’t prevent us from making the playoffs, it was just an opportunity.”
