PLYMOUTH — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced the reopening of State Route 23 in the Town of Plymouth, just west of Ashcraft Road with alternating single-lane traffic, controlled by a temporary signal, as work continues on a culvert replacement project.

“The roadway had been fully closed for approximately one week, with a signed detour, to allow crews to set the culvert in place,” said NYSDOT Public Information Specialist Anya Kardos.

After concerned citizens and officials reached out to request an option beyond completely closing the road due to the safety and well being of local residents that may need medical transportation, NYSDOT reconsidered the total road closure and in a little over a week, prepared the road for single lane travel.

Kardos noted the construction work is expected to continue for another four to five weeks, weather permitting.

According to NYSDOT, their mission is to provide a safe, reliable, equitable, and resilient transportation system that connects communities, enhances quality of life, protects the environment, and supports the economic well-being of New York State.

They also remind drivers that lives are on the line; slow down and move over for highway workers.
