SOUTH OTSELIC – Ice water rescue calls are a high-risk event in New York State. Every winter, as citizens take to the ice for fun and recreation, the potential for disaster increases and the South Otselic Fire Department is working to be prepared for that eventuality.
At the end of January, two of department’s 40 members completed the New York State Ice Rescue Technician Course offered through the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Now that the department has two certified Ice Rescue technicians, they are trying to make sure the department is equipped in the event of an ice water emergency.
“We are hoping to get two suits for our two current members that are certified ice water rescue technicians. We are also looking to get some rescue throw bags along with other small water rescue boards used for removing victims from water,” explained Public Information and Training Officer and Second Assistant Chief Carl McCann.
The ice water rescue suits cost roughly $1,000 each.
“For a small, volunteer agency, the cost of this equipment presents a significant financial challenge,” read a recent social media statement from the department.
