Bridges in Poor Condition in Chenango County, Data sourced from: NYSDOT https://www.dot.ny.gov/main/bridgedata
CHENANGO COUNTY - At the end of 2025, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) released the state Highway Bridge Data for each county.
This data includes the location of the bridge, the feature it crosses, the year it was built or replaced, the last date of inspection, which authority owns it, and the general condition of the bridge.
In Chenango County a total of 15 out of 257 bridges were determined to be in a status of poor condition.
At a January Chenango County Board of Supervisors meeting, bids were accepted to repair one of these bridges. The Bridge New York Fund is also helping the county to repair a historic bridge on the list. Chenango County Department of Public Works, is responsible for repair and maintenance of 140 bridges across the county and works to maintain them on a regular basis.
According to the NYS DOT, a bridge being deemed in “poor” condition does not imply that is is unsafe or likely to collapse, the term is used to identify bridges that when left open to traffic, typically require a weight limit posting, significant maintenance and repair to remain in service and eventual rehabilitation, or replacement to address deficiencies. Of course, unsafe bridges are closed to traffic. Bridge improvement decisions are made after a detailed evaluation of inspection reports and taking into account other information such as traffic volumes and loads.
