NEW BERLIN— The 2025-26 Unadilla Valley Holiday tournament kicked off on Saturday with several local teams in action from Chenango County. It was all local for the girls with UV, Greene, Norwich, and Sherburne-Earlville. For the boys, it was UV, Norwich, South Kortight/Andes, and Stamford/Jefferson.
The championships and consolation games will take place this afternoon and evening.
Game 1:
Norwich 59 - Greene 39
Norwich remains unbeaten with a 20-point victory. The Purple Tornado were off to a slow start, but picked themselves up and raised the intensity to take control of the contest. Norwich also had three players in double-digits.
Brooklyn Burke led the team with 18 points, including four three-pointers. She also scored 10 points in the second quarter off the bench. Josey Ryan added 15 points with three three’s as Brynley Ryan finished with 10 points.
Emma Urgo had nine points, most coming in the second half, as Alivia Burrell finished with five points and Emma Baker with a bucket in the fourth quarter.
Greene’s Mia Yahner led the team with 15 points, making all six free-throws received. Lexi Cloyd added 10 points, making all four free-throws in the third quarter and had two three’s.
Braelyn Blakeslee had four points in the third quarter as Mya Leggett-Carlin also had four points.
Deidre Colgan hit a three in the third quarter while Ahraya Whitt and Kaitlyn Youngs both made a free-throw in the loss.
Game 2:
Sherburne-Earlville 52-UV 46
The Lady Timberwolves have a strong final quarter to pick up the victory over the Storm. Morgan Mikalunas led S-E with 19 points with five three-pointers and made four-of-six free-throws. She also had eight rebounds and five steals.
Abbie Green added 11 points with great efforts in the first and final quarter. Both Peyton Darragh and Kendall Hill finished with eight points. Hill led the team with four assists.
Brynn Shaver and Cora Franklin both had three points in the win.
UV was led by Kora Johnson with 16 points with eight points in the final quarter. UV was held to single-digits in the first half before trying to get back on track in the second half, but fell short.
Myriah Taylor finished with 12 points as Shyla Roberts had 11 points.
Avery Golliver had five points in the second half and Allison Daniell with two points in the loss.
Game 3:
Norwich 62- Stamford-Jefferson 32
The Norwich Purple Tornado boys’ basketball team stays unbeaten with a big win over Class D’s Stamford-Jefferson. Norwich dominated from start to finish with quick movement and intensity on both ends of the court. Norwich picked up multiple offensive rebounds and steals, even though the team did get into some foul troubles.
Kassen Stubb and Aiden Young both led the team with 11 points as Cooper Chrystie finished with 10 points, playing a consistent game. Gavin Burrell added eight points off the bench while Carmine Pastore had seven points and Collin Reid with six points.
Brayden Adoff had five points as Brevin Bennett and Carter Chrystie both finished with two points.
Game 4:
South Kortright/Andes 68- UV 60
The Unadilla Valley boys’ basketball team came up short in the final minutes in the high-scoring affair. Foul troubles and not finishing when they needed baskets on offense led to the deficit. South Kortright had 51 free-throw attempts, where they made 26 of them, helping them have an advantage over the Storm and control of the possession.
UV could not contain South Kortright’s Parker Popp, who scored a game-high 24 points.
There were also several lead changes, where both teams were tied at 47 at the end of the third quarter, but South Kortright went on a run before UV got within two with 1:39 left. However, the Storm could not finish when they had opportunities and could not hold on defense.
Preston York led the Storm with 17 points with strong play in the first three quarters, but limited in the fourth.
Denzel Peter stayed consistent throughout the contest off the bench as he had 16 points.
Declan Potter finished with nine points as Tristan Collins had six points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Storm the 32-29 lead at halftime.
Kaleb Smith finished with four points as Braden Golliver and Zack Welch both had three points.
Seth Meagley added two points in the third quarter.
