OXFORD - 6 On The Square in Oxford will host a concert from fan favorite Dave Gunning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.
The folk musician is one of Canada’s treasures, a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who has earned multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, a Juno nomination and nine East Coast Music Awards. He has shared the stage with Ron Hynes, Rita MacNeil, Stuart McLean and Stompin’ Tom Connors, and he has been recognized as a master of his craft, both as an award-winning singer-songwriter and a captivating performer.
Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and can be purchased at 6onthesquare.org or call 607-843-OTS6 (6876) to make a reservation. Doors open one hour before the start of the performance at 6 Lafayette Park, Oxford. The concert also will be streamed live online for $10. More information can be found at 6onthesquare.org.
Gunning finds inspiration in his Pictou County, Nova Scotia, backyard, shining a light on well-deserving underdogs and tackling tougher topics. In recent years, those topics have been social and environmental ones — causes that he holds near and dear.
Despite delivering some very important messages in his songs, audiences should also be prepared to laugh at his shows. His banter is perfectly timed, self-effacing and funny.
Gunning released his latest record, “The Same Storm,” in 2022. Written and recorded mostly at home during the pandemic, the album continues along a similar path its predecessors walked — celebrating moments big and small, lending a voice to the folks that need it most and indulging in a bit of nostalgia on the way.
Open Mic Night returns to 6 On The Square on Thursday, Oct. 2, with emcee Ray Stark. Sign-in begins at 6:45 p.m. with performances at 7 p.m. Musicians and poets are encouraged to share their talents.
Performers will use our professional sound equipment, and we’ll provide a sound tech. There is no charge to perform or be in the audience, but we’ll gratefully take donations.
