NORWICH — The Place has received funding from the Community Foundation of South Central New York Women’s Fund to provide Strong Women Self Defense classes for another year.

"[The Community Foundation of South Central New York's] support is what makes it possible for us to keep offering these classes, and we are deeply grateful for their investment in women’s empowerment here in Chenango County," said The Place Executive Director Sharon Vesely. "With this funding, we are able to continue offering another full year of classes. These sessions are designed to build confidence, provide practical skills, and create a safe, supportive environment for women to learn and grow together."

Classes are held every third Friday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Norwich High School cafeteria, located at 89 Midland Drive in Norwich. Upcoming classes include October 17, November 21, December 19, January 16, February 20, March 20, April 17, May 22, June 19, July 17, and August 21.

The Strong Women Self Defense classes are free to attend for Chenango County women and girls aged 13 and older.

Registration is required to attend. To sign up, contact The Place at 607-336-9696.

In the classes, participants learn how to defend themselves using jiu jitsu, a martial arts style that utilizes grappling techniques.

Christine Gould from the Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy will continue to lead the classes.

"We are especially grateful for the continued partnership with Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy and our collaboration with Norwich High School. Their support ensures that the classes are both high-quality and accessible," said Vesely. "We are also so thankful for the dedication and commitment of our instructor, Christine [Gould]. Her expertise, encouragement, and ability to connect with participants have been central to the program’s success. Christine’s leadership has truly been the heart of this effort."

The Place first began offering these classes in partnership with the Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy and the Norwich High School in September of 2024. In their first year, Vesely said they had 67 people participate in the program.

"The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive—participants told us the classes gave them practical tools, boosted their confidence, and created a sense of community and connection," she said. "Many shared that they felt stronger, safer, and more supported because of what they learned. That response is what encouraged us to keep building on the program."

Individuals are welcome to attend more than one class, as repeating and practicing the techniques helps to build confidence with them, making them easier to use in the event of an assault or attack.

Vesely said no prior experience with jiu jitsu or martial arts is required, and she hopes local women and girls will take advantage of the program.

"No prior experience is needed – just an interest in learning, connecting, and building confidence," said Vesely. "We want women to know that this is a space for them, whether they’re looking for practical self-defense skills, a supportive community, or simply a new opportunity to grow."
