SHERBURNE - The Chenango County Bird Club invites all to their next meeting at 6:30 p.m., September 10, in the Visitor Center of the Rogers Environmental Education Center, located at 2715 NY-80, Sherburne.

The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), with a wingspan of 9.5 feet and weighing up to 25 pounds, is the largest land bird in North America,

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), by the mid-20th century, condor populations had dropped dramatically, and by 1967 the species was listed as endangered by the federal government, with only 23 condors recorded world-wide in 1982.

Through conservation efforts in part by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the total population has grown to more than 500 condors. In 2004, the recovery program successfully hatched chicks in the wild. Since 2008,the California condors has been flying free in the wild for the first time since the program began decades ago, reported the USFWS.

The main program will begin after a short business meeting and will include a presentation on the endangered California Condor and various aspects of managing ecological problems.
