NORWICH – A surprise check from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation is allowing county historians to plan an historic site marker in front of the Norwich Jewish Center on South Broad Street, once the home of a prominent family that led the success of the Norwich Pharmacal Company.

The Chenango County Historian’s Office received an unexpected $2,050 from the Pomeroy Foundation for the distinguished yellow and blue steel marker, said Deputy County Historian John Antonowicz. Plans are to have it installed by the Oxford DPW which has been working with county historians for several months to restore other historic site markers throughout the area.

The Jewish Center was once home to famed Norwich businessman Robert Eaton who headed the Norwich Pharmacal Company during its heyday in the early 20th century. The Norwich Pharmacal Company became most notable for developing products including Pepto-Bismal and Ungentine ointment.
