Norwich Man Charged With Attempted Murder Over Domestic Dispute Stabbings

OTSELIC – On Wednesday afternoon the New York State Police based at Norwich charged a man for allegedly stabbing two other people with a knife during a domestic argument in the Town of Otselic.

Members of the NY Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Corey J. Sawyer, age 22, of Norwich, and charged him with two counts of second degree attempted murder, class A felonies and two counts of second degree assault, class B felonies. He is also charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanors.

Police said an investigation revealed that Sawyer stabbed two people with a knife during a domestic dispute.

Following a 911 call at about 1:24 a.m., Wednesday morning, troopers and Chenango County sheriff deputies were dispatched to a residence on State Route 80 in the Town of Otselic for a reported assault.

After arriving police located two victims and transported them to Chenango Memorial Hospital. Later they were transported to Wilson Medical Center in Binghamton for additional treatment.

One victim was listed as an adult, a second victim was listed as under the age of 17. 

Sawyer was also transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital due to injuries he sustained prior to trooper’s arrival.  He received medical treatment and was held by police.

Police said both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and their conditions are stable.  Three other children, under the age of 17, were also at the residence when the incident occurred. 

Sawyer was processed at the state police station in Norwich and arraigned in court.

He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $250,000 cash bail, $500,000 bond or $1 million partially secured bond.  His next court date was scheduled for October 4, 2022.
