Sidney 7, Oxford 2

The Sidney Warriors defeated the Oxford Blackhawks 7-2 in Tuesday’s Section IV Class C playoff.

Bill Kozak went 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

He drew a walk in the first, singled in the third, flew out in the fourth and hit a towering, two RBI triple to right center in the sixth.

Kozak was Sidney’s starting pitcher as well. He allowed two runs in six innings of work. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered just four hits.

“Billy pitched very well, he worked fast and threw strikes,” said Sidney varsity baseball head coach Kyle Vibbard, “He’s been coming through in the clutch his whole career.”

Kevin Davis was the game’s losing pitcher. He lasted five innings, walked three, struck out three and allowed three earned runs on seven hits.

“We were mixing in a few more change-ups and curve balls than we usually do,” said Oxford varsity baseball head coach Chris Palmer, “There’s not an easy out in their lineup. There is no place where you’re going to throw nine fastballs and get through the inning. That’s not how you approach this team.”

The top of the first saw Oxford take an early lead, 2-0. An Anthony Ruling error put Cameron Heggie on base.

Heggie moved to second on a Jeff Lawton slow roller to second base.

With one out Matt Moore hit the baseball to right field, moving Heggie to third.
