Norwich boys win second straight team title

SHERBURNE – Norwich’s boys won a second straight Invititational team title capturing the 10-team Sherburne-Earlville Invitational on Friday night.

Norwich led all teams with seven total first-place finishes, and polled 129 points to top runner-up Ilion by 27.

Kyle Acenowr won the 200-meter dash (23.8) and eighth-grader Matt Murray gave the Tornado a win in the 800 (2:09.1). Jon Foulds won the 400-meter hurdles, Norwich captured two of the three relays, and Max Morse (pole vault) and Patrick Taylor (long jump) won in the field.

Host Sherburne-Earlville’s Noah Huff was named the most outstanding track athlete by virtue of his wins in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, and Unadilla Valley’s Tyler Foulds won the most outstanding field athlete with a winning shot put toss of 49-9 1/4.

On the girls’ side, Norwich’s 400-meter relay team of Katie Benenati, Cleo Daoud, Mia Stevens, and Sarah Bonnell set a meet record timing 51.6 seconds as the Tornado finished in second place behind Ilion. Bonnell also tied a meet record in the 100-meter dash (12.7).
