Alice Merring


NORWICH – Alice M. Merring, 96, of 46 Eaton Avenue, Norwich, New York, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
Born July 20,1911, in Holley, she was the daughter of John P. and Avis Jackson McCrillis.
On Aug. 30, 1939, in Holley, she married Samuel J. Merring who died Sept. 21, 1960.
She is survived by daughters, Linda M. Fahy and her husband, Thomas, of Norwich and Sally M. Reiss and her husband, Charles, of Hinesburg, Vermont; also five grandchildren: Jill S. Fahy of Burlington, Vermont, Blythe B. Fahy and her fiance, Kurt Lundvall, of Jersey City, N.J., Thomas R. Fahy of Norwich, Alexandra Haselton and her husband, Britton, of Bolton, Vermont, and Evan Reiss of Hinesburg, Vermont.
Following graduation from Holley High School in 1929, Alice attended Keuka College and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1933, whereupon she began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Clarendon.
She and her husband settled in Norwich in 1942. Alice returned to full-time teaching in 1954 and taught 6th grade at Perry Browne School until her retirement in 1976.
Following her retirement, she remained active in the community through her volunteer service with the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s Pink Door and Gift Shop, as well as the Food Pantry located at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Alice was a long-time member of the United Church of Christ First Congregational of Norwich.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the United Church of Christ First Congregational, 11 West Main Street, Norwich, with the Reverend Joseph F. Connolly officiating. Committal services will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Norwich.
There will be no calling hours.
The family suggests memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
