John Ebovicz


NORWICH – John T. Ebovicz, 77, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Norwich, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, in the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center of Bradenton, Fla.
Born in Edmeston in June of 1930, the son of John and Julia (Gazde) Ebovicz, John grew up in Edmeston and attended the local schools. He was a World War II U.S. Naval veteran, having served his country until his honorable discharge. On July 18, 1949, John went to work for the Norwich Pharmacal Company and continued there through its successors, retiring from Procter & Gamble as supervisor of maintenance on June 30, 1992, after almost 43 years with the company. He had become a member of their Quarter Century Service Club on July 18, 1974.
John was a man who was involved with his community. He bowled on several of the city’s leagues, and served the City of Norwich on its Parks Commission from Jan. 3, 1978 through the end of 1981. He was a familiar figure during his long walks around Norwich. An avid golfer who thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, John chose to winter in Florida for several years before moving there permanently in the late 1990s. On July 26, 1956, in St. Paul’s Church, he married Genevieve Fineron.
John is survived by his companion, Laura Alger of Sarasota, Fla.; his sister, Stella Kutney of Binghamton; and nieces and nephews, including F. Patrick Laughlin and wife Pamela of Norwich, Robert M. Laughlin and wife Janice of Ithaca, and James Kessler and wife Bernadette of Murrieta, Calif. He is also survived by great nephews and nieces: Jamie, Tiffany, Heidi, and Blaine. John was predeceased by his wife, Genevieve, on Sept. 14, 1995; by his sisters Virginia Srnka and Jennie Miner; and brothers Max Dzuibek, Bennie Ebovicz, and Walter Ibowicz.
Memorial services for John will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor of St. Paul’s Church, will officiate. Interment with full military rites in St. Paul’s Cemetery will be on Monday at 10 a.m.
Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
