Frederick Tinker


OXFORD – Frederick D. Tinker, of 39 Scott St., Oxford, passed away on Oct. 5, 2007 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich. 
He was born on Sept. 17, 1910 in Oneonta, the son of the late Edward and Lillian (Tillinghast) Tinker. On June 30, 1936 in Holland Patent, he married Kathryn Jones, who passed away on Nov. 10, 1997.
Frederick is survived by his son and wife, Robert and Stephanie Tinker of Middleburgh; his daughter and her husband, Gwendolyn and Edwin Walker of Brockton, Mass.; his grandchildren, Stacey Welch of Palmyra, Brian Tinker of Arvada, Colo., Renee Young of Gilboa, Bronwyn Kelly of New York, Blair Tinker of San Jose, Calif., Matthew Walker of Franklin, N.H., and Kelly Wiegers of Hudson, N.H.; and 13 great grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Mei Yan Tinker, Nathan, Emily and Kristen Walker, Benjamin, Lauren, Sophia and Jacob Wiegers, Joshua Myers and Riley Young, Stella Tinker and Rachael Welch. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Eileen Tinker of Webster, widow of his son Edward (Ted) Tinker.
Fred was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Hartwick College and Syracuse University.  He taught English and drama and coached basketball at Smyrna High School, was high school principal at Sherburne for five years, supervising principal at South Otselic for 11 years and superintendent of schools for 15 years at Oxford Academy and Central School.
Always a great lover of music, he played the violin and trumpet, was choir director of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta, the South Otselic Methodist Church and the Oxford Methodist Church where he was a member since 1954.  He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, furniture and boat refinishing, clock building, gardening and hosting his extended family and friends at his beloved Kayuta Lake camp.  He loved to share jokes and especially enjoyed a decades-long practical joke competition with his dear next door neighbors, Robert and Margaret Carey.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8 at the Oxford United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Martin, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne on Monday at 2:30 p.m.  
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church of the Oxford Fire Department Emergency Squad.
