Wilson Sherman


McDONOUGH – Wilson “Sherm” Sherman, 87, of McDonough, passed away on Oct. 6, 2007 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich. 
He was born on Oct. 5, 1920 in McDonough the son of the late Jay and Lucy (Benedict) Sherman. Due to the death of his mother, he was raised by his grandparents, Cyrus and Henrietta Sherman. On July 7, 1942 in Calvary Episcopal Church, McDonough he married the former Lucille Hayden.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille Sherman of McDonough; his children, Jerry and Carol Sherman of Honeoye, NY, Matthew and Susan Sherman of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Martha and Harlie Stowell Sr., of Smyrna; his grandchildren Gregory and Cyndi Sherman and daughter Summer, Jennifer Sherman, Harlie and Renee Stowell, Jr. and daughter Madisyn and son Mytchell, Holly and Joseph Hoffman, Elizabeth and Andrew Sherman. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by his brothers, Stanley, Horace and Carl and his sister Lucy Purdy.
Sherm attended McDonough Union School and Oxford Academy and Central School.  He was employed by Emerson’s Store in McDonough and Bell Aircraft Co. in Buffalo.  He entered the U.S. Navy on Aug. 21, 1942, serving in the Pacific Theatre until Nov. 27, 1945 reaching the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. He became Postmaster in McDonough in May of 1946 and served until he transferred to the Rural Mail Route, retiring in 1978 after 32 years of service. He was an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church in McDonough, serving several terms on the vestry and was their buildings and grounds caretaker for many years.  He was an active member of the McDonough Fire Department and Emergency Squad for several years. He was a long time member of Oxford Lodge #175 F&AM and was a volunteer at the Taste and See Soup Kitchen in Oxford.    
A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oxford with The Very Rev. Ralph Osborne officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday with full military honors will be in Union Cemetery, McDonough.
