Victor Misilewich


NORWICH – Victor V. Misilewich, born to Anna and Joseph Misilewich, April 14, 1919 in Huntington Hospital, Huntington, passed to his eternal reward Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at 10:45 p.m. at St Joseph’s Hospital Syracuse while in the presence of his loving family.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years Ruth L. Misilewich, who now resides at Gilmore Nursing facility in Norwich. Victor also leaves three children Victor Michael Misilewich, and his wife Laureen of Franklinton, North Carolina, David Lewis Misilewich  and his wife Phyllis of National Park, New Jersey, and Martha Romahn and her husband Norman of Norwich. Victor has one surviving brother, Francis Misilewich of Huntington Station. He was a loving grandfather to eight grandchildren: Patricia A. and Joseph M.  children of Michael, David A.,  Jennifer A., Catherine A., and Charlene A. children of David, and Amanda L.  and Melissa M., daughters of Martha. Victor was blessed with six great-grand children; - Alex J., Sydney K., William J., Nicholas V. and Alyssa L., Victoria J. Finally the first  great-great grandchild Kai-Li.
Victor had a very varied and interesting life career. He worked in the agriculture industry delivering feed, grain and coal for F. M. Concanon. In World War II he served in the European theater as a combat MP in Patton’s third army landing at LeHarve in France, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, the Bridges at Ramagen, and being involved in the liberation of a number of concentration camps where by being fluent in the Slavic languages he served to document the statements of survivors for history and the prosecution of the Nazis responsible for the Holocaust. Following the hostilities he continued to serve as an Army MP in the stabilized liberation of Paris France.
On returning to the United States he worked as a machinist becoming a master tool and die maker at Fairchild Stratos. With the closure of Fairchild Stratos he began a career with Sears as a service manager in the automotive department, until his retirement. Victor’s final career was as a Sergeant of Security for South Huntington School District. He retired when he was seventy-five years old and moved to Norwich.
Skilled at many tasks, he also held other positions, including but not limited to: a cabinet/carpentry business called Colonial Woodcraft where he did the cabinet carpentry work for local designers in the Huntington area. He also had a great interest in photography and served as Police Photographer for the Huntington Police Department, in addition he took portraits and multiple wedding photos.  Victor served for over 30 years as a volunteer fireman with the Huntington Manor Fire Department. rose to the level of Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, was a member of local chapters of the international Lions Club, and for a number of years an active member of the VFW. 
Victor Misilewich’s contributions to his communities and society was multi faceted and skilled, he made a lasting impression wherever he was, that he was a strong willed, knowledgeable individual. He enjoyed night fishing trips with his neighbor and friend,  Mervin Watson. and his gardens and varied creative projects around the home. If he did not have something, he would invent and make what he needed. In Norwich at his daughter’s ice cream shop Mr. Twister/Bagel Buddy,  he gained a reputation for the best homemade soups in town. Over his short time in Norwich he became a town fixture with his faithful companion, his yellow Labrador, Buddy.
Contributions may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, 1-8, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at noon at St. Paul’s RC Church, Norwich with the Rev. Douglas Cunningham as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. 
Friends may call at the Marian Chapel at St. Paul’s Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
