Albert Thompson


NORWICH – Albert Thompson, 84, of Norwich, passed away in the early morning on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at his home.
Born in 1923 in Jonesboro, Tenn., Al was the son of Robert and Blanche (Guinn) Thompson. He and his family moved to the Norwich area when he was 8, and he remained here for the balance of his life. Al and Leah J. Gibbon were married on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1941, prior to Al’s serving his country during WW II in the European Theatre. Returning home with his honorable discharge, Al worked for a time for the Norwich Pharmacal Company and later for Victory Markets, from which he retired in 1988 as a foreman. Concurrently, Al owned and operated a family farm on the Pat Parley Road in Norwich and also worked on a farm on the River Road. An outdoorsman at heart, he loved hunting, fishing, and anything where he could be outside. He was a good neighbor and friend who was always willing and able to help others.
Al is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leah Thompson of Norwich; his children: Blanche Carrol Zimmer and husband Stan of Owego, Cathy Osterhout and husband Bruce, and Thomas Thompson and wife Joan, all of Norwich; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild. He was predeceased by his daughter, Connie Nesbitt, and brothers Bernie and Harry Thompson.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815; or to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of Al’s family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
